Other PREPPING Ideas and Things to Consider

Other Prepping Ideas

Considering various approved and credible mystics have foretold that the chastisements that will strike the earth are going to be worse than the Deluge to the point that the living are going to envy the dead, two thirds to three quarters of the human race are going to be wiped off the map, and, fruit trees and the earth itself will not produce in the aftermath after the Three Days of Darkness, I personally think it is a good idea to not only get as spiritually prepared as possible, but to get as practically prepped for survival as much as one is able to as if we are going going to be struck with a series of huge international, natural disasters, which we are, should we live to to see it!

Understandably, everyone's situation and budget is different, but sometimes we might overlook things, and this list might help to figure out what you can do in advance to prepare.

Please note, I'm not a professional survival guide expert, this is something I've personally considered and working on bit by bit, and, if it could help anyone out there and give them idea on how to prepare, then great.    Of course, this list is just an idea to consider when growing or contributing to your emergency stockpile and is not an exhaustive list, there is probably a ton of stuff I could put on here that's escaping me at the moment!  Bookmark this page - I will add items to the list when and if I find them and if they may be of use and if people give me some ideas I didn't think of.

Here is listing of Headings I've included here, with a list of Amazon links where applicable.

  1. Food stocks and Water

  2. First Aid Prep – Medications. Hygiene and Cleaning supplies

  3. Home Economic Skills / Off Grid Skills

  4. Survival Guides

  5. Keeping up Morale – Entertainment, etc.

6. Trading, and, other things to think about.....

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  1. FOOD STOCKS and WATER PREP

The most basic thing we need to keep on hand would be food! If you can keep at least 6 months of non-perishable foods, that would be a good start. If you can stock up more, great. More power to you.

*) Canned goods can last for years if stored in a dry, cool / even-temperature place.

Until any disasters hit, remember, get mostly canned goods that you would normally use anyway, and ROTATE them

We are not only going to need meat, but definitely protein sources like beans, and don't forget veggies. Use and stock up again after use, especially if you live in a hot or damp area. I've had a huge problem in my area of Portugal with dampness and heat, so cans end up rusting and bursting after awhile – other people here who are trying to get prepared are also finding the same problem.  Newer cans are being made with cheaper material and are not like the old cans from the 60s per se as well, so that's a problem I'm finding with regards to the heat and damp fluctuations.

 I can store cans up to a few years, but using and rotating goods keeps cans up to date and I can get to use them before they hit the rusting / bursting point.

Of interest, the mystic Alois Irlmaier says we are to avoid anything stored in glass jars, or anything that is not in a sealed can / tin for surviving after the Three Days of Darkness as the poisons that are going to spread through the earth are going to get into containers that are not cans. While I think this pertains to things we will need to forage for outside our homes after the Darkness hits and might not pertain to things we have in our house, but still. It's better to be safe than sorry. Store up mostly on things that are in cans.

*) What do do about pasta, rice and flour, things not in cans, etc? I'd personally still go ahead and make a supply of that in airtight tupperware containers. (we're still possibly going to have some famines and other natural disasters even before the Three Days of Darkness. For example I'm so glad I had a survival supply of stuff when the Covid lockdowns hit, and we couldn't get to stores, and when we did, supplies were limited!).   Add bay leaves to the flour, rice and pasta containers, etc to keep pests away. This stuff definitely needs to be rotated, so buy just enough that can be rotated, but not too much that it will spoil before you can use it.

If a bag or two of flour goes off on you in the meantime, if bugs do get into it, etc, don't throw it out! I've used it in the garden as a compost.

*) Condiments: sometimes, this is an easy one to forget for emergency situations, but get dried herbs, spices, pepper, salt, dried powdered mustard in tins, etc, Having an extra supply can help keep morale up, it's going to be hard surviving on bland and icky food - this can seriously cause morale to drop, and it's going to be hard to survive when morale drops in a 'do or die' survival situation.  Trying to make survival portions and meals taste a bit better will help.  Condiments can also be rotated in the meantime.

*) Also Consider bulk survival rations that only need water, or minimal cooking – but specifically for the 3 Days of Darkness, look for rations packaged in tin cans;

- “Food Storage Depot” also has a huge selection of freeze-dried bulk cans.

- “Nutrient Survival” has some interesting freeze dried options in 2 lb cans with added nutrients, (click here.)

WATER

Needless to say, we are going to need a supply of water.

*) Start looking in your area now and see if there is a water source, like a stream, river, or, get some rain barrels. Don't drink from them now of course, but, you do not want to wait until a disaster hits to realize you have no idea where to find water. Get to know your locale.

*) Bottles of distilled water. (Updated August 24, 2024)  Keep some bottles on hand as an emergency until you can find a regular source or supply of water should the Three Days hit, especially if you were unable to find a source of water prior to this.  Keep at least 5 litres per person per day up to a two week supply if you have the storage space.  Make sure it is DISTILLED so it lasts longer, it has been boiled so there should be no pathogens in it

 For my stockpile, I actually use the distilled water used for irons, car batteries, etc. It is drinkable, but do test different brands, some may taste better than others. I also find the bottles this comes in are much stronger, at least in Portugal, and don't fall apart like the flimsier normal drinking spring waters, etc.  And, it's cheaper in Portugal than regular bottled water!  Handier for stockpiling for emergency-only situations. Do note, while all metals and impurities are stripped out in the distillation process,  all minerals / electrolytes have been stripped from this water too, so, make sure you have a stock of multi-vitamins / salt / electrolytes on hand,  since I've been reminded by a commenter about needing salt as well if you drink too much of this. (Hence the update).   Drinking distilled water for a long time can deplete you of your electrolytes if you are not getting enough electrolytes from your food, but, if you are eating well enough as possible under the situations that may hits, you should be okay in a dire emergency situation, like if we are trapped in our homes after the 3 Days, and urgently need a supply of water to drink short term, etc.  I'm only recommending distilled water for an emergency only, 'do or die' short-term supply for when we're trapped in our homes until we find a better source of water.  The idea here is to SURVIVE this horrific aftermath first.

You can even get water distillers that work on stove tops, so if you get a good sturdy when with metal tubing, they should work on wood burning stoves if you need to purify water this way.

I've found a couple on Amazon, I'll put them here, but you can do your own homework of course on what you  may need.

 --) 1.5 Gallon pure copper distiller by "Kingsunshine Store"

--) 3 gallon still with copper lid by "Kingsunshine Store"

--)  5 gallon still with copper lid by "Kingsunshine Store"

---) D-still Lite Do it Yourself Emergency Survival water distiller

 ----) Here's an interesting compact option  for water filtration - portable water filter straws to drink through, pack of 4

*) Water Purification Tablets. If a serious worldwide disaster hits like the 3DD, we won't have water purification plants, and, we may not have running water, we will need to source water from the wild, or rain barrels, etc. And, getting water filters may not be so easy after a disaster hits. Of course, we can boil water we find, and we can get distillers, but, that means back to good old wood burning stoves, and that may not be an option for people living in cities until they can 'bug out' to the countryside.  Water tablets are smaller and easy to store.

 ---Here's a link to a considerable variety of water purification tablets to choose from, click here.

  1. FIRST AID

*) Consider taking a basic First Aid course, I.e. learn how to CPR, how to dress wounds, etc.

*) Or, at least keep Emergency First Aid information on hand. Remember the old phone books we used to get in the mail or delivered on your doorstep? If you still have one of the old big Yellow Pages, keep it! There was a basic First Add instruction manual included them. Find it and keep it with your 3DD supplies. Or, look for First Aid instruction manuals that are not in copyright and can be downloaded from the Internet.

If you don't have time to find the old manuals and would rather have a First Aid book on hand, here is a list of option on Amazon, click here.

*) Remember to stock up and keep a basic First Aid kit: The best stocked one you can get, the better as we may not have emergency services at all, and, when the earth is knocked back to the 1800s in terms of quality of life, trying to get the convenient supplies we are used to like sterile medical supplies is going to be hard if not impossible- a lot buildings, etc are going to be destroyed in the cataclysm, and trying to get a working society back up and running is going to take quite some time. There is a huge list of First Aid kits to choose from on Amazon, click here.

Consider adding even extra stuff too, this comes in under the heading below.

*)  SURVIVAL KITS ... this might also be handy to have -  here is a wide range of Survival Kits to choose from on Amazon, click here.

*) Medication & Personal Hygiene Stockpile

As mentioned, we may not be able to get supplies like medicine after a gigantic disaster hits – stock up on the basics such as aspirin, Tylenol / Paracetamol, other non-prescription drugs you use or think you may need, also antiseptics, and multi-vitamins. Our survival rations are going to be lacking somewhat, and until we can learn to grow food again and learn how to raise animals, etc, we may need to take vitamin supplements to try and keep us as healthy as possible.

*)  If you can, stock up on your prescriptions.  (In fact I'm almost tempted to start up a mail order 'Buyers' Club' service for this - I've had friends who could not find certain medications in the US, but were available here in Portugal, or, discovered their prescriptions were much cheaper here in Portugal due to the State controlled free healthcare systems, espeically as generics are available here. Boy, are you guys getting ripped off in the States!  As long as I had a copy of the prescription and get the prescription updated, pharmacists were willing to let me order what was needed and mail it.  If you are interested in me starting up something like this - please, drop a comment in the 'Post a Comment' box below!  I'd have to do some research on this and if it is still possible to do .....

And, don't forget personal hygiene products! Stock up on toothpaste, deodorants, soaps, sanitary napkins and feminine hygiene products, etc. Use and rotate your stocks as these things have active ingredients in them.

*) Cleaning supplies: consider stocking up on bleach, and other household cleaning products. But, get enough that you can rotate and be careful here – plastic bottles are made to biodegrade now, so if you get too much and keep it for too long, the bottles may just fall apart if you can't use them up, and leak this stuff everywhere! Learned this one from experience I must admit.

*) Household necessities, like matches, toilet paper, paper towels, and, a supply of cloth towels and dusters when we can't get the paper stuff anymore. Stock up on good quality blankets, sheets, etc.

*) Mini camping porta-potty or hygienic toilet bucket when the sewage system no longer works is an idea. Click here to see options.

  1. HOME ECONOMIC / OFF GRID SKILLS

What I mean by this heading is we are going to need to re-acquire the skills we had before we got too used to the various modern conveniences that have made us spoiled rotten so to speak.

After the chastisements, it appears the world is going to be knocked back to the 1800s in terms of survival and lifestyle quality – we may not have electricity for quite some time, stores may not exist let alone offer 'ready made' and microwaveable meals, etc. We will have to get back to basics and re-learn the skills our grandparents and great-grandparents had. I'm pretty sure we won't have the internet either, so getting some knowledge now and gathering a library of physical books on various home economic skills is a good idea. It surprises me how many young people have no idea how to cook the very basic basics. I've heard of a teenager nearly burning the family house down because they had no idea you have to add water to the pot when boiling a potato! Parents, you also need to start teaching the kids how to survive too! (Even if the 3DD doesn't hit for some, this will come in handy when they leave home for college, etc!)

That means …....

  1. If you don't know how to cook, now's the time to start learning the basics of cooking and baking. Don't forget we may eventually have learn how to cook over an open fire or old wood stove again! Here is a list of books on how to learn how to cook for beginners, click here.

  1. Learn how to sew, knit, make things, etc.. Yes, we may be reduced to this as well. Now is the time to acquire or boost your skills here, we won't be able to buy clothes as easily and will have to repair what we have. And who knows? The stuff you make now could be turned into a side hustle to make some extra cash in the meantime! If you can, you can also repurpose old material and sew it into new objects rather than automatically throwing stuff out.

- Links to books on learning how to sew, click here.

-Links to books on learning how to knit, click here.

      1. Learn how to grow and preserve your own food. I've noticed here in Portugal and in the rest of the Mediterranean that even when people have jobs, but have a bit of land, they still grow veggies and raise chickens, etc. I thought it was just as a hobby still until I realized some people need this to survive, (not all jobs pay well, minimum wage is about €700 a month in Portugal) and, they've learned not to fully rely on the governments for help when things get bad, like famines and wars, and so they always keep their 'hand in' with regards to growing food as this is a skill that must be acquired if it is not something you were raised with. Growing food, knowing the seasons, learning what grows in your area, and what kinds of plants grow well together and what don't, how to take care of the different types of fruit trees, plus learning how to compost, etc, takes a lot of hit and misses for beginners, so, this is something that takes time to acquire. Start practicing now as we don't want to try and learn how to due this during a famine! If you do not have land, practice indoors with containers. –) This means getting some books on learning how to garden and grow veggies, indoors and outdoors. This book list is only a start, click here.

-) Collect a non-GMO heirloom and heritage seed bank of veggie, fruit and medicinal herb seeds. (Even if you do not plan to garden now, this may be handy to have.) Here's a list to start with, click here.

  1. Getting household / garden equipment / tools that DO NOT NEED ELECTRICITY – we will be back to wood burning stoves, and hand operated appliances and tools, old Singer sewing machines, old hand operated meat grinders, wind up clocks, etc.   Try and start a collection of this type of stuff. While there is stuff like this for sale on Amazon, you might find quite a bit of this at second-hand or in thrift shops. Also, if you use this type of equipment now, you can be saving on electricity in the meantime!

    * Light supply:  Electricity and battery free light supply.  Of course, those who know the prophecies are aware nothing is going to light during the actual 2 and 3 Days of Darkness except the blessed beeswax candles - but, if we're going to have major other catastrophic events in the meantime, we can assume we may lose electricity, and we certainly are not going to have electricity after the Big Days!

    We're going to need light.  We can stock up on other candles for this.  It might be good to get a couple of good old fashioned oil / kerosene lamps and learn how to use them.  Also,

    there are battery, free hand-crank flashlights.  Getting one or two of these might be handy!  Here are a few option on Amazon:

    *) LifeGear Storm proof crank flashlight

    *) Simpeak 2 pack hand crank flashlight

    *) Evelot 4 pack hand crank flashlight

    *) Evelot 6 pack hand crank flashlights

 *) Latern-style hand crank flashlight

- If we are going to go back to cooking over open fires, make sure your cookware can handle open fire pits and fire places like cast iron cookware. Learn also how to season and take of it so it doesn't rust. Also, try not to get anything with wooden handles, etc, as these might get scorched over an open flame. Here is a list of cast iron cookware, click here.

5) Regarding non-electrical gear, also consider solar ovens and parabolic mirror stoves and cookers – they might take some practice and getting used to, (some sun ovens take longer to cook, while parabolic mirrors can set things on fire if you're not careful!) but they do not need electricity. Here is a list of solar cookers, click here.

6)  If you just can't live without some electrical equipment - portable solar panels might be an option, here is a list, click here.

* Also, consider portable solar power stations, click here.

Do your homework on the strength of the electricity you may need regarding portable solar panels, etc.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  1. SURVIVAL GUIDES

This kind of goes without saying, be we going to need anything that can help us learn how to survive and live off-grid when the electricity stops working, and stores no longer exists, at least for a time.

Here are various lists of books you can consider, click on the headings:

::::::::::::::::::::::::

Here is a series of survival books written by a former Special Operations member, Bob Mayer:

*) "The Green Beret Pocket-Sized Survival Guide: First Aid, Water, Food, Shelter, Scavenge, Specific Emergencies and Disasters" - (The Green Beret Guide)

*) "Survive Now- Thrive Later:  First Aid, Food, Shelter, Specific Emergencies, Stockpile, Scavenge, and more."

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Homesteading:

Other books: I'm once again going to mention getting other books – such as building up a spiritual classic library, like the Traditional classics written by saints, authentic Church doctrine, etc. Also, if you have kids, get homeschooling material, as it will be the family unit that will be keeping society going for a time and educating the next generation after the 3DD hits, etc,

Again, a reminder to also stock up on sacramentals like holy medals, scapulars, rosaries, blessed salt, etc as we don't know when we may get these again.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  1. Keeping up Morale – Entertainment, etc.

This is going to be a very frightening time, especially for the young ones in the family. Yes, we will need to pray more, but we will also need to learn how to keep up morale and even learn to have a little fun or at least have some light relief in the aftermath if we hope to keep strong mentally during it all. There is a reason that soldiers during WWII were provided with entertainment after all.

*) Get board games, puzzles, and educational toys, etc.

*) Books, books books! It will also be up to us to keep culture alive! Make sure you save good clean books you would want the next generation to read.

*) Learn an instrument – like the guitar, etc:  You don't have to be a prodigy!  We may not have radio or TV for quite some time. You will be grateful to have someone around who can play an instrument, even at a basic level.

*) Heard from someone into 'survival mode' ideas - keep a supply of sweets and treats that have a long shelf life, etc – like hard caramels, or hard candy, etc. Having a treat like this once in awhile can boost morale and make things still seem like they're a little bit normal, especially for the kids.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

6.)   TRADING - (and other things to miscellaneous think about.)

 Cash – I can’t tell you how many times that in just everyday life I’ve come across businesses that only accept cash. And in an emergency, if the power goes out and you need gas, the gas station will probably still be able to pump gas for a while (because of the generator) but probably won’t be able to swipe any cards. Keep some cash around for everyday and for emergencies and disasters.

 But....in case paper cash becomes worthless if a full societal collapse happens, you can stock up on extra every day stuff that is going to be highly sought after in a survival situation and therefore can be traded – someone needs seeds or matches and you've got a huge stockpile? Have candy, chocolate, or a lot of extra medical or hygiene supplies? Bingo. See if you can trade the surplus you have for things you need. You can also trade or barter with your skills, like sewing or woodworking!

 *) Extra pair of glasses – If you wear glasses, you need at least one backup pair. Don’t forget a glasses repair kit (or gorilla tape).

 *)  Pet supplies – Make sure they have their needs taken care of, such as any medications, food, water, first aid, toys, brush, etc.

*)  Proper clothing – Choose the right clothing for your region. For example, cotton is bad for the cold, but great for the heat.

Hope this list helps! If I have forgotten something, or, you have a recommendation I could add to the list, leave a comment in the Comment Box below!

  1. Thank you for this page but distilled water is not safe to drink much of. If you stock up on distilled water you will at least have to add some salts to it. You can get get acute water toxicity from the dilution of electrolytes in your body by drinking distilled water. A multivitamin is not an electrolyte replacement. Any purified or spring water would be better.

    1. Thanks, but if you noticed, I was not advising to drink it as a long term solution, but as a basic ultra emergency short term supply to have on hand when the grid goes down until you find another water supply. Distilled water comes in stronger bottles I've noticed, at least in Portugal. Even during an earthquake if you end up trapped, they say to drink from any water supply, even toilet water as it more important to stay alive first. What's coming is going to be worse than any disaster human kind has ever seen before, so consider distilled water only as a severe emergency case.

    2. Thanks for your reply. The distilled water in my country comes in the same flimsy plastic as everything else. Also I have tried keeping flour in sealed mylar bags and it was still good after 2 years, however the bags are easily punctured/damaged, which is why I had to use them after 2 years.

  2. What about blessed grapes?

  3. Please don't fall for the 'blessed grapes'. That was started by a fake mystic that was twice condemned by the Church. The messages promote doctrinal error regarding Our Lord's primary mission / plan of salvation of the human race, and contain some very odd red flags showing something is not right with this one.
