#133 B - We Must Suffer to Gain Merits – Everyone Has A Mission as a Member of the Church – Forgive those who Hurt You - St. Jerome Gives her the SECRET on HOW TO LOVE JESUS – Abandonment to the Holy Will

Ecstasy date September 30, 1881.

(Source: “Marie-Julie Jahenny: Une Vie Mystique, Henri Boucier, pp.22-26)

Marie-Julie Jahenny: “If on earth we only enjoyed love without suffering, we would have no merit; the earth seems soft as a heaven. (But) there is no comparison between the heaven of the saints and the earth, which is the place where Christians hoard treasures for heaven as they walk through it.  To show us that we are on earth, Jesus leaves us love among pains, and pains among love.  This is the distinction between heaven and earth.   In heaven, we enjoy love.  On the earth, we also enjoy it, but not to the sublime degree.  This is the distinction. By the wonderful kindness of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the saints can say: 'We have experienced sufferings. We ascended to heaven. We are now seated there among love. The earth also has suffering and love.'

Apparently, the is a description by Bourcier of what happens next:

(Bourcier: Marie Julie adds that Jesus, by a prodigy of goodness gave us His very Blessed Mother and the Cross to allow us to climb higher to him. Jesus asks to be loved and He says that the Cross is a wood fit to kindle the reign of love in our hearts. The Cross is a torrent of delights for souls. It is the intoxicating cellar where one comes to drink the wine that strengthens, It is the cellar where the wedding of the Divine Lamb with the soul is celebrated at all times. It is the hearth where Jesus descends to warm Himself with the souls united to Him, where all fed on the food of grace. It is the supreme vessel in which man embarks on the sea of holy love and which leads to the sacred refuge of the Heart of Jesus.

Marie-Julie testifies to her regrets at having understood so late the deluge of love flowing in our souls. Through battles, penances, tears and mortification, the holy daughter of La Fraudais strives to put only God in all her thoughts.)

Marie-Julie: “We are all on a mission on earth. The Fathers of the Church have the primary mission which descends from the Lord. It is the most glorious, the richest, the most triumphant, the most prodigious, the most respectful. In this fruitful mission, let us pray that their mission will become abundant!

Following the fathers of the Church, we too have a mission.  We have His children to serve, those who come to fight.   We have to defend religion under attack.  We have lips and a tongue, a word to silence those who despise Our Lord Jesus Christ.  We have to love our neighbour, to relieve him, to pray for him, to provide him with what he does not have. If we must, to tear out our heart to console his, if it is the will of Jesus.  How beautiful is our mission!

Can't we tell those who are far from God to come closer to Him? Can't our word touch their hardened hearts? When we have done what we could, Our Lord rewards our desire to see the soul return to His mercy. What a mission God entrusted to His children, to forgive those who, without doing so on purpose, were able to make them suffer!  Excuse those who make us cry; we are sure they do not do it on purpose.  Jesus acts through them to add diamonds to our begun crown.  Thus, He makes us climb the rungs of perfection.  One cannot attain total perfection on earth, but one can enter deeply into perfection here below. When one makes great progress on earth, this powerful advancement produces great merits.

Forgive! There is always time to forgive the many offenses.  Let us love those who are the cause of these merits.  Let us embrace them! Send them our smile! May our hearts have a special affection for these dear souls who make us suffer. Let us be proud to suffer for Jesus. He chose to share suffering: fear not to defend the Cross of Calvary! When they cast outrages on us, Jesus will be happy to see the goodness of His children. Tell others to keep silent. Let us not be afraid to tell him to still his created tongue to sing the praises of God. Let us not be afraid to tell him, and Jesus will reward us infinitely, a reward from the sweet and beloved Father.” [NOTE: I.e. Here it seems that while we must forgive, she says do not be afraid to tell others to stop using their tongues for evil outrages, such as calumny against another person, rather, our tongues were created to praise God. A correction like this is an act of charity.]

Marie-Julie then called upon St. Michael: “Come lead us, support us! For hell is empty, all the damned are on earth with their devouring fire, sowing a deluge of evils of all kinds. The Justice of God is near!

She continues: “O Mary, you, the Blessed Mother, calm the wrath of your Son! It is the one thing on earth that grieves the loving souls of Jesus.  Yes, the more one loves Him, the more this pain tears the heart.  I pray to my God to forgive me for letting this escape, but I'm not the only one suffering (from this).   It is not being able to do anything before Jesus.  He is always the first to act. If we do an act of love, His Heart sighed for us before ours. If we make an act of surrender, Jesus sent us the smile of His sacred lips before ours left earth for heaven. If we send Him a kiss of love, Jesus has sent the first and sweetest kiss of peace before our sigh is uttered. If we offer Him our heart before dawn, if before dawn we salute Jesus, His Heart greeted us before our salutation came out of our mouth.   If before dawn, we cast our gaze towards the distant heaven, 'My God, I love you!' He said before we could: 'I love you with all My Heart!´ It is an incurable pain for me that I could never do anything before you!'

(OBSERVATION / Possible explanation: I.e. It is a pain, that we as such sinners are dependent on God for every good act we conceive or do - cannot do one good act for Him without Him or His grace, that's how fallen we are, and that He knows what we are going to do before we even do it. This part of fallen human nature is a spiritual suffering for Marie-Julie.)

(Bourcier continues to describe the rest of the ecstasy: at the moment of the way of the cross, the Lord appeared to Marie-Julie under the appearance of a severe and rigorous Judge against sinners, but just and tender towards just souls. After a while, she saw Him in the form of the Ecce Homo, torn and bloody, that the holy guardian angels of souls make her see the crosses the souls under their care carry with serenity. Jesus stood at the top of Calvary and said:

Jesus: 'Come, My beloveds who have accepted the burden of the Cross! You have sinned, but you have repented. Come into My Love!'

Marie-Julie saw the guardian angels presenting to Jesus the souls they all guard. She saw Our Lady singing the Te Deum, assisted by the procession of virgins. It was a beautiful day, but for that it was necessary to pay more, and Jesus gives a heavier cross to Marie-Julie.

She then asked St. Jerome the secret of how to love Jesus, and the great saint responded that the beginning of this secret is to say:

"God's holy will be done! Then you have to go to the blessed Virgin. It is still necessary to say:

'My God, I submit myself to your Divine Will! If you want me to love You very much, be blessed! If you want me to have no love, always be blessed! Put me in the state You want, I will be as submissive and resigned to You in the hardest trials as if You placed me in the most consoling of your favours!'

And St. Jerome added:

'Many times, walking in the secret of loving Jesus, you will kiss His Wounds and you will say to each one of them (the wounds):

'My Good Jesus, if you want me to be fervent, I am your child ! If you want me to be cold and arid, I'm still willing to accept it!'

(NOTE: this appears to be a revelation of a devotion to the five Holy Wounds, six if we add the Wound in the Shoulder: to acquire the grace to love Jesus perfectly, it seems we are to kiss each of the Wounds, perhaps on a crucifix, or if the crucifix is small, to kiss it the same amount of times, saying this small prayer of accepting God's Will regarding the grace to love Him.)

Marie-Julie then received the strike of the lance after speaking for a moment with the most Holy Virgin. Jesus then speaks:

Jesus: “Guard well the faith and confidence! The Cross will be the shield that will make you invulnerable!”

Our Lady: “My children, pray! My heart is sad, my eyes are two fountains of tears. My gentle hand removes all danger from you. My heart will be your asylum and your refuge against all dangers.” (With hands outstretched, she added:) “I am your Mother and I will never abandon you, never!”

Jesus: “I bless you with the outpouring of My Heart and by My Divine Wounds! My Heart remains open to you with that of My Mother whenever you want. Grace awaits!”

#179 Our Lady Calls for Sacrifices – Evil Will Become Worse and God will be Forced to Increase the Punishments – Sacrifices Appease His Justice and Lessens the Punishments – Honouring Our Lady Consoles the Heart of Jesus – Abandonment to the Divine Will is Better than Desiring Heaven

Ecstasy date August 14, 1928

The Blessed Virgin: “The Divine Heart needs victims of sacrifice, of expiation, there is a need for them everywhere. It is the sacrifice in souls, in the hearts, in the body, in the affections and in the Holy Love which loves souls, love that I love so much!”

Marie-Julie Jahenny: “Good Mother, still, relieve so much suffering!"

The Blessed Virgin: “My little children, at this moment and in increasing it will be planted everywhere. There must be suffering, there must be abandoned souls (i.e., who abandon themselves to the Will of God and accept suffering), wounded hearts are needed, there is a need for victims for the Divine punishment, (so that) the just chastisement of the Divine Justice of God does not increase!

The evil will become worse, the crimes will accumulate and the Justice of the Lord in many ways, will more noticeably affect the earth. For this justice not to increase, it is suffering, works, prayers, sacrifices, immolations, works, many works.

My beloved little children, let yourselves be guided by the Divine Will where are all the lights and the right ways that please the Divine Creator of all things. "

Marie-Julie: “Thank you, dear Mother. "

The Blessed Virgin: “And tomorrow, I will listen to your praises, Heaven will answer you, I will hear your prayers, Heaven will bless you, I will listen to your sighs and the Divine Heart will look into your soul and say:

'I am consoled in the glory that you give to My Holy Mother.' ”

Ecstasy Date August 23, 1928 - Surrendering to the Holy Will of God is better than Desiring Heaven

Blessed Virgin: - To surrender to the Holy Will is better than the desire for Heaven. By this abandonment, you amass much and your riches will be eternal. Continue, O souls, still a little suffering in the will is what the heavenly Bridegroom wants for Himself, to compensate, to repair, to soften the many outrages that tear It (i.e His Will). Surrender to the Holy Will. Remain in it, suffer in it, hope in it and you will fall asleep in it. (i.e., pass from this life in God's Will.) As long as you have a lowly body, you will suffer, but it is a very short hour. Your suffering is of great value for the salvation of souls.”

#102 St. Julius - The True Servant of God is Never Downcast - Submission to the Will of God is a Powerful Spiritual Weapon

Ecstasy date December 12, (1878)

(Note: it is unclear which martyr is visiting as there are several martyrs named Julius. The visitor gives clues in that he died under an 'emperor' during a persecution period, but not long before peace was established. It is possible he died under Diocletian just before Constantine came to power.)

I am St. Julius, Martyr for the cause of God, for supporting the infallibility of the Church of God ... I was arrested, shackled and tortured … But the threats and torture have not shaken my faith and my courage. I was thrown into a dark cell, loaded with heavy chains for three mornings. I was flogged. My whole body was dripping with blood, torn. When interrogated again, I answered the Emperor: "I want to die a Christian in the Catholic Faith." I was then tied to a huge iron post which contained hot coals. I was burned on the kidneys. I was then sawed into pieces. They broke my arms, my feet. Finally, my body was sawed in half and thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil. That is how my martyrdom ended. I gave my soul to God in the most cruel torments, but with the greatest and the sweetest joy …

It was not much later, when peace was restored, that the bodies of martyrs received burial. God kept our flesh intact. (i.e. were incorrupt.)

Now, a word on behalf of Our Lord.

Our Adorable Lord, from Heaven, communicates to us the divine graces. He makes us heirs and heiresses. Today, as before, the Lord pours abundant blessings on earth. The reapers are the least numerous! Blessed is he who reaps the blessings of the Lord! The true servant of the Lord is never cast down, never disturbed. There is in him superhuman strength, communicated by God's grace …

Do not fear the wrath of men. They have many words, they seem very strong, but soon comes a breath of heaven upon them, they are as low as the reed! The power of God shows proud man that his voice is nothing! …

Let the world make a calvary for you, but never allow it to help you mount there!

(I.e. as the saint explains below, don't let the world after persecuting give help, comfort, or aid, we must take up the cross and declare we suffer all according to God's Will and for His glory, not the world's.)

When the throne (i.e the cross) will be prepared for you, go up quietly with the Lord's help, with the help of Mary, your Guardian Angels, your patron saints, your Brothers and Sisters of Heaven. Do not ask those in this world to help you! When you come to the place of Calvary, tell the world and those who led you there: "We want to be slain here by the Will and the Hand of the Lord. Go away, you who have raised the mountain and planted this calvary, let us meditate in silence the humiliations of a suffering God! ..."

You are all engaged in a great battle. Equip yourself with powerful weapons. Here is one for you: It is the weapon of the Holy Will of God, holy submission to the Holy Will of God ... The world shouts "Death to Christians! Death to your Faith! Death to Pastors! Death to the subjects of the Cross! Death to the Spirit!" But the Cross triumphs, it is the death of hell, it is the Weapon that is resistant to all! Courage! ...”

#91 St. Distérique – God's Love for Us – Sufferings Grant us Merits - God Consoles – God Controls All

Ecstasy of October 29, 1878

I am Saint Distérique, bishop and martyr for the cause of the Holy Religion, and for supporting the Holy Church, Mother of us all. I was struck hard on all parts of the body ... I was then laid on a rack and struck again terribly. I received like Our Lord the blow of the spear from the hands of my tormentors. I was left lying in my blood on the pavement waiting for some kind souls to give burial to my body …

Now, a word on behalf of Our Lord.

Oh! How the love of Our Lord is strong! How sweet it is, when you taste It with submission. Love gives life to souls. Love adorns the heart with the Divine warmth and delectable tenderness. What can make you fear when you have the love of Christ? ... But know this well, on the earth all men suffer. They are overwhelmed with pain and sorrow. But the merits of this portion is so great, so perfect and noble in the eyes of the Good Lord! It is why He visits us lovingly with His pains and His sorrows when we are agreeable (open) to Him ...

On earth there are souls who enjoy the happiness of consolation, there are others that seem abandoned and are not subject to any charity, it seems. Our Lord regards this contempt as a great and culpable indignity because He Himself loves all souls, because to Him they are all infinitely precious. (i.e. it is an indignity againt the virtue of charity to not be a source of Christian comfort). Our Lord also wants, sometimes, wishes Himself to be the consoling Father of these souls. That is why He wants them to have no consolation, no assurance, no light from men. (i.e. sometimes souls are allowed to be left with no earthly consolation because God Himself wishes to be their consolation.)

Our adorable Lord has all power, all grandness. He can do whatever He wants and everything He does is very powerful. All men together are unable to make the smallest part of what God does Himself. They seem to touch upon it but they are very, very far. That is why all that God made, everything that He commands is resistant to men and will resist them by a powerful force. However, there is to be found on the earth souls who seem to want to blame God and want to order Him (around)! What is the word of man, the creature? It is a breath before the wind ... Our adorable Lord needs neither advice nor powers, nor permission of creatures, to do what He wants. This is why we must submit and without passing judgement. (i.e submit to His will in all things). God does what He wants ... All who suffer for the glory of His name will one day be richly rewarded and recompensed ...”

Note: St. Distérique apparently is a previously unknown saint. There are no details about his life in the general biographies of the saints, and Internet searches have not turned up anything, including searches with exchanged letters and attempts to Latinize the name.

#81 St. Felix of Dunwich – Abandonment to the Divine Will also makes us Friends of God

St. Felix of Dunwich gives a detailed account of his mission, then gives a short message to the Friends of the Cross.

Ecstasy September 23, 1878

I am St Felix, who worked to convert the English. I come to say a word on behalf of Our Lord. ... I suffered all sorts of painful accusations and black persecutions. I did not cast it off, I continued my hard work. ... I continued my mission from Heaven. I was often struck by the infidel souls who were far from God. I was brought before the tribunal, but I did not waver.

After winning a multitude of souls to God, I took some rest in the middle of the English. I was cared for at their hands and their hearts sympathized with my sufferings. It was in this great suffering, the Lord opened to me the beauty of Heaven. It was on the cross that I entered the sweet intimate conversation of God's secrets. To reward me, the Lord sent me all kinds of sorrows. I was crucified in every limb, privately, to work for the salvation of souls. Suddenly, our Good Lord rendered the life of the members of my body dry. I could still, for some years, work to convert the Great of England who had remained obstinate in their refusal (to accept) the Faith. I went to London where there were a great number of souls in the grip of hell. I was stoned twice, I was insulted. But God in His loving power can always do everything for His Glory. He supported me. In the midst of these cruel persecutions, I was bruised, covered with wounds. In the night, an angel came with a jar, closed my wounds and the next day, I was completely and miraculously restored.

I made a large number of conversions in London and they persevered. I returned then to the middle of the English and I found their faith strong and powerful. ... But I had still to suffer terrible assaults. I was threatened with being put in prison by the guards. I was about to stand trial because I was slanderously accused. But my innocence before God was without blame. I was delivered by the voice of an unknown young man. On the eve of trial, I saw him enter the cell where I retired to pray and do penance. He said, "Now leave England and go to the nearest town of France." This voice was unknown to me, but its sweetness ravished my soul. I resisted. In the deep of night, the same voice called me back and said, "Leave quickly because they are ready to take you and lead you before your accusers." Immediately, I followed the young man who took me to that city that touches the edge of France (Dover), and there I spent a month and a few days. The persecution had relaxed a little, but I was still threatened.

I returned to England. I armed myself with a huge cross of the old days and I faced my judges and my detractors. I told them: "Here is the victim, I put myself at your disposal, judge me, condemn me. But, in judging me and condemning me, you condemn Him whom I bring attached on the Cross." These words produced consternation on their faces. I won the victory. I was then pressed to preach and I was greatly inspired by Heaven. My judges and my accusers fell at my feet. I converted them. Here is the reward of terrible persecution. The Goodness of Heaven fell upon the poor accused victim, innocent ... Then I travelled through many countries, I have always suffered, persecution still followed my steps.

Dear Brothers and Friends of the Cross, we make joy from the bread of bitterness since it is only by contempt that we a rendered into glory. And it is not only by persecution that we are made the true friends of God ... Let us be detached. Remain indifferent to what they say about our person.  It is in abandonment to the Divine Will where we find a powerful force that recreates all in us.

::::::::

Observation: judging from the account St. Felix gave his his difficult life and mission, 'abandonment' to the Divine Will does not mean sitting around doing 'nothing' and expecting God to do it all!  As we see, 'abandonment' means accepting what comes freely and without murmuring, be it suffering, persecutions, hard work, etc., all accepted in a spirit of detachment, not letting human respect or our own wills and self-interest mar the work God puts before us.

Notes: Saint Felix of Dunwich bishop and apostle of England, was originally from Burgundy, hence is he also known as St. Felix of Burgundy. He brought about the conversion of Sigebert, King of the East Angles, when that prince was in exile, and later was summoned by Siegbert to evangelize East Anglia. St. Felix undertook the mission with the approval of St. Honorius of Canterbury, and placed his episcopal see at Dunwich, now washed away by the sea. He preached with great success in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, opening schools on the French model. He died in the year 648. Feast Day March 8.
